Flag Placing

In preparation for the upcoming Memorial Day, we will pay honor to our local heroes. Oviedo Citizens In Action Inc. (OCIA) joined in partnership with Post 243 of Oviedo’s American Legion by placing flags at the headstone of Veterans who fought in America’s wars.

Some Veterans fought in World I and II, some in the Korean conflict, in Vietnam, and some of our younger Veterans were part of Operation Desert Strom in the middle east.

Originally known as Decoration Day, which originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Here in Oviedo, we honor our Veterans by Flag Placing.

Participates in this year’s flag placing included American Legion Post 243, OCIA, Boys Scout Troop 608. Participants were:  Linda Wiehagen OCIA, David Wright Post 243/OCIA, Janice Boston OCIA, Gary Gay Post 243, Bill and Jill Mitchem of Post 243 and Commander Laurel Ross Post 243.
